Question #1: What is the Pythagorean Theorem? You
should use words, pictures, symbols, and
numerical examples. (10 marks)
The Pythagorean theorem was discovered by Pythagoras in Enchant Greece. He discovered that the altitude and base squared on a right triangle added together
will equal the hypotenuse squared. This will work for any right triangle. All you have to do is follow this formula and full in the measurements.

The Pythagorean theorem was discovered by Pythagoras in Enchant Greece. He discovered that the altitude and base squared on a right triangle added together
will equal the hypotenuse squared. This will work for any right triangle. All you have to do is follow this formula and full in the measurements.
As you can see in this diagram if you multiply 12 by 12 you'll get 144. Then if you multiply 35 by 35 you'll get 1225. Then if you multiply 37 by 37 it should equal
144+ 1225 if it is a proper right angle.
so 37 x 37= 1369
144 + 1225 = 1369
144+ 1225 if it is a proper right angle.
so 37 x 37= 1369
144 + 1225 = 1369
So this proves you can find if a triangle is right or not.
But then you think to your self what if another number is missing that isn't the hypotenuse? Well that is easy all you have to do is use algebra. For instance if the 12 was missing in the diagram above you would just fill in the formula(
)
so it would be......

Question #2: How do you find the surface area of a right
rectangular prism? You should use words, pictures,

rectangular prism? You should use words, pictures,
symbols, and numerical examples. (10 marks)
The definition of a rectangular prism is it has 6 sides, it is made up of right angles, and the lines are straight.
These are many examples of rectangular prisms.

Many every day objects are rectangular prisms....
Just like this Mini wheats cereal box :)
To find a rectangles surface area all you need is a simple formula.
2(l . W) + 2(l . H) + 2(W . H) = surface area of a rectangular prism.
We were discussing in class where this formula came from. The "L" stands for length, the "W" stands for width, and the "H" stands for height but you can also use "D" instead which stands for depth.
2(l . W) + 2(l . H) + 2(W . H) = surface area of a rectangular prism.
We were discussing in class where this formula came from. The "L" stands for length, the "W" stands for width, and the "H" stands for height but you can also use "D" instead which stands for depth.

So If you think about a rectangular prism there are 2 of each side. There is a front and a back which are the same. There is 2 sides and there is a top and a bottom which are the same. So if you look at the image above you can think out the formula. The surface area is finding the area of the outside not the inside. So really you're just finding the area of each side and adding them together.
If you look at the front side to find the area would be L times H. To find the side it would be W times H. and to find the top it would be L times W. So that explains the formula. So then you just fill in the measurements and work it out.
Question #3: How do you find the surface area of a right
cylinder? You should use words, pictures, symbols,

Question #3: How do you find the surface area of a right
cylinder? You should use words, pictures, symbols,

Okay everyone now lets not panic. If you think about it a right cylinder is only a rectangle and 2 circles put together. So the definition is it has to have 2 circles on either end and they have to be attached by a rectangle made into a round tube.

So in this diagram you can see a cylinder's net and the folded up version of the same shape.

So in this diagram you can see a cylinder's net and the folded up version of the same shape.
So to find the Surface area (S.A) of a right cylinder you have to follow a simple formula....Well mayby not that simple but just don't panic :)
r=radius Pi=3.14 h=height
So if the the radius was 3 cm and the height was 21cm what would the S.A be? lets work it out...
and that's how you find the surface area of a right cylinder. But if in a question they only give you the diameter and height just divide the diameter by 2 to get the radious then solve it just the same:)
Here are some more examples of cylinders....
The pillsbury doughboy couldn't live without cylinders...He wouldn't be able to package up his delicious cinnamon rolls! not to mention turnovers :)
And don't forget for when you're sick! everyone has a can soup. But to think if you didn't have cylinders there wouldn't be chicken noodle soup!!! With vegetables! How would you servive!
Question #4: What is a polygon and how do we
classify one? (10 marks)

A Polygon is a closed figure with straight sides.
A Regular Polygon: This is a polygon that has all
sides equal and all angles the same.
An Irregular Polygon: This type of polygon has sides different lengths. They can be all different lengths or they can have some the same. An irregular polygon also has different angles.

This is an example of a 20 sided polygon. As long as the sides are straight and the figure is closed it will end up becoming a polygon.
