Jeff's Measurement Growing Post

Question 1: What is the Pythagorean Theorem?

The Pythagorean Thereom states that the square of the hypotenuse is equal to the square of the altitude and base combined.

Question 2: How do you find the surface area of a right rectangular prism?
The formula for finding the surface area of a right rectangular prism is:

SA = 2(l x w) + 2(l x h) + 2(w x h)

Question 3: How do you find the surface area of a right cylinder?

To find the surface area of a right cylinder we must first understand what a right cylinder is. A right cylider is a 3 dimensional object that has two identical ends (also called a top and bottom) that are circles and have one curved side that stretches around the circumfrance of the ends.

This is a right cylinder net.

These are cylinders.

The formula for finding the surface area of

a cylinder is this:

2 (3.14) x r x r + 2(3.14) x r x h

In the diagram to the left the formula would be:

SA = 2(3.14) x (2 x 2) + 2(3.14) x 2 x 5
SA = 6.28 x 4 + 6.28 x 2 x 5
SA = 39.44 + 62.8

SA = 102.24 cm square

Question 4: What is a polygon and how do we classify one?
These are some examples of Polygons

Polygons are enclosed shapes that has 3 or more sides.

Irregular Polygons: Irregular polygons can have sides with different lengths. They can also have different sized angles.

Regular Polygons: All angles are the same and the lenghts of the sides are all the same.

Jeff - Nice graphic, but be sure to use the correct names for the polygons as discussed in class.
