Karen's Measurement Growing Post

Hey Everyone, hope you like my growing post :). Just to let you know:

Question #1: What is the Pythagorean Theorem? You should use words, pictures, symbols and numerical examples.

The Pythagorean Theorem was developed by a Greek mathematician, Pythagoras. The Pythagorean Theorem is used to find lenghts of the sides of any right triangle. Area of a square = length x width
Pythagoras treated each sides of a right triangle as though it were a square and discovered that the total area of the two smaller squares then wrote his discovery as a formula.

So what is the formula that Pythagoras came up with?
Well, its simple : use the formula to find the hyponuse or either two of the legs.

The picture above: is of Pythagoras on snoopy's body teaching William Hung about the Pythagorean Theorem. *William Hung was not alive at the time of Pythagoras just so you know!

1)A right triangle has a hypotenuse or 30 and a base of 20 what is the missing leg?

2) A right triangle has a base of 5 and a leg or 15, what is the missing hypotenuse?



Question #2: How do you find the surface area of a right rectangular prism? You should use words, pictures, symbols and numerical examples.

A rectangular prism is a three dimentional shape where all the sides are rectangles and all sides meet perpendicularly. The bases are congruent with eachother. Cereal boxes and bricks are rectangular prisms.
To find the surface area of the examples above: the cereal box and the brick. Measurments will have to me made. Plug the measurements into the formula and solve.
To the left, is an example of a rectangular prism. and examples of its length and height which are important when solving for volume and surface area.

To find Surface area, use the following formula: SA=2(l*w)+2(l*h)+2(h*w)
The formula for finding Volume:V=l*w*h
Example of Surface Area:
A Rectangular Prism has a lenth of 23m a width/depth of 13m and a height of 12m. What is the surface area?
Example of Volume:
Find the volume of a rectangular prism if the length is 23 the width/depth is 13 and the height is 12.
Surface area and Volume is helpful when it comes do designing a home, room, or painting a room or a whole house.

Question #3: How do you find the surface area of a right cylinder? You should use words, pictures, symbols and numerical examples.
A three dimentional shape made of parallel segments to a line of two parallel pnales conected to congruent bases that are circles in the planes. Examples include pillsbury crescents in a tube and some certain trash cans are cylinders.

To find the surface area, first find the measurements then plug them into the formula and solve.
To the right, is an example of cylinders with the radius which is extremely important to use when solving anything involving a cylinder or a circle.

To find the Surface area of a right cylinder, use the formula:
The formula may be hard to use at first, once it is used more often it will become familiar therefore making it memorized.

Question #4: What is a polygon and how do we classify one?

A polygon is a shape that is closed up that has at least around three lines. Regular polygons are made up of same symmetric lines, angles and length. Irregular polygons are made up of non symetric lines.

Here on the right are some examples of a polygon. Ex. octagon, hexagon, decagon, nonagon, square and other shapes that is closed up.


Shape are everywhere in the world!

Dr. Pepper is a drink, that takes the shape of a cylinder, it has a length and a radius. By finding the measurements for the can, the circumference, diameter, and radius of the circles on the top and bottom can be found. The Surface are and Volume can be found my using the formulas on Question# 3.


Babybel cheese, is a circle. it has a circumference and a diameter. Measure the diameter,<----------> and then find the radius <---- which is half or the diameter.


The Kraft dinner box, is a rectangular prism. It has a height, a width, and a length all it takes is a ruler to measure it and solve for the Volume and Surface area by using the simple easy formula as shown in Question# 2.

Just for fun!: As an experiment look around the house for shapes and try to find the volume, surface area, perimeter, area, and etc. If you get lost, simply review the questions and formulas and try again. Good Luck!!!
